The Parcel That Went to the Wrong Place

Discussion guide for teachers and parents

Aim

Checking an official-looking message through another, already known source.

0–3 minutes: recall an important scene. 3–10 minutes: discuss the questions. 10–15 minutes: try the joint activity and invite everyone to name a possible next step.

Discussion starters

  1. What makes the new map look trustworthy? Is that enough evidence?
  2. Why does Piet call the number on the original delivery list?
  3. What caused the mistake? Did someone definitely mean harm?

Notes for the adult – not a fixed model answer

A sender name and an official tone do not prove that a message is correct. Piet uses contact details he already knew. An accidentally sent test message caused the mistake. Checking is about finding out what happened, not shaming the person who made an error.

Shorter version: choose one question. Longer version: compare two possible solutions.

To finish: name one clue from the story and one step you would try in a similar situation.

A way to start the conversation

I am glad you showed me. Let us also check it through a source we already know.

Try it together

Invent a message that changes the location of an agreed meeting. Suggest a way to check it without using new contact details in the suspicious message. Do not use real personal details.

Keep the discussion about the characters; no one has to share personal experiences. Passing is welcome and answers are not graded. Do not ask for real personal details. Asking for help should not lead to shame or automatic punishment.
